Joshua West initially, the unconventional confused me. i could not wrap my head around a world lacking binaries. as i continously refreshed my mindset, i instead began to understand it more as i realized that everything does not have to fit within anyone’s binary. gone was that which limited me, now replaced by a ravenous chasm seeking new experience and knowledge.
i relocated to new york city. i pushed myself even further into shanghai. this has curated within me a diverse vision of lesser recognized forms of expression and many things considered “niche”. as i learn more, my need to fill unfamiliar gaps in my knowledge grows. locational and mental motion both create a drive to further expand and broaden my horizons, geographically and intellectually, so i can explore all that the human mind can create.
my current world of exploration is within the digital. the innovative ideas and technological affordances that it posesses provides me with a comprehensive tool in discovering the subversive. outward forms of expression, much like the digital, are constantly evolving, pushing humankind further and further to chase novelty. nonetheless, as we approach a more digital world, it is essential to consider modes of accessibility.
i was once limited by my location and resources, however, i have had the immense privilege of being able to explore what i found. i believe that not only fashion, but any form of outward expression should be available to anyone who seeks it. my human drive is fueled by the broadening of the digital realm and who it can reach. ultimate expansion, on all axes, is how we can ensure a diverse and wholly represented world.
